About CIVIC
Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is an international nonprofit with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians caught in conflict zones. CIVIC envisions a world in which no civilian is harmed in conflict. Our mission is to support communities affected by conflict in their quest for protection and strengthen the resolve and capacity of armed actors to prevent and respond to civilian harm. We are advocates who believe that no civilian caught in conflict should be ignored, and advisors who provide practical solutions to preventing and responding to civilian harm. About the Position
Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) has been present in Ukraine since 2017, building the capacity of conflict-affected communities in Donbas, the Ukrainian government, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), and civil society to strengthen the protection of civilians (POC). Over the past four years, CIVIC’s team has supported the establishment of one of only a few civilian casualty tracking and mitigation cells in the world, delivered training and policy support to AFU to strengthen POC in military operations, supported the drafting of a National Strategy for the Protection of Civilians validated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, published critical research to document the challenges of civilians in eastern Ukraine and the impact of hybrid warfare on civilians, and facilitated civil-military dialogues to strengthen trust between the Ukrainian military and civilians.
As the conflict perpetuates, CIVIC is moving forward with plans to adapt its on-the-ground programming and respond to the dramatically new protection landscape in Ukraine. Our response efforts are structured around three main pillars: 1) Strengthening Communities’ Preparedness and Resilience to Current and Future Protection Threats; 2) Building Effective Civil-Military Coordination Systems, and 3) Research, Documentation, and Advocacy on civilian harm in Ukraine’s high intensity, hybrid war.
