DAI is seeking interns for the Kyiv or other regional HOVERLA office in Ukraine (Poltava, Lutsk, Lviv, Zhytomyr, Rivne, Odesa, Uzhhorod) to occupy role of Communications Intern to join USAID Governance and Local Accountability (HOVERLA) Activity’s team.

Project Background

DAI Global is implementing the USAID-funded Governance and Local Accountability (HOVERLA) Activity, based in Kyiv, Ukraine. The purpose of HOVERLA Activity is to facilitate the creation of Ukrainian local governance systems and processes that are more self-reliant, accountable to citizens, inclusive and able to provide services. The Activity has three objectives:

  • Objective 1: Ukraine’s system of local self-governance is increasingly institutionalized and effective
  • Objective 2: More self-reliant subnational governance
  • Objective 3: Citizens play an increasingly influential role in local governance processes

Position Overview

The Communications Intern will provide substantive administrative support to the HOVERLA Communications team in planning, designing, and implementing HOVERLA’s communications activities. As required, the intern will work with local partners and key stakeholders, including national officials, local communities, government agencies, businesses, and mass media. This position requires good writing and speaking skills in English and Ukrainian; meticulous attention to detail; excellent record-keeping, documentation, and file management skills; and a good understanding of event organizing and media coordination.

The position will report to the Communications Director or her designee and be based in HOVERLA’s office in Kyiv or the regional office in Lviv, with the option to work remotely as needed. The internship requires a minimum part-time commitment of 20 hours per week during regular business hours, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This is a paid position, and we anticipate the candidate to start as soon as HOVERLA presents an offer.

The ideal availability for this role is mid-November or the first week of December 2023.

We are looking for an intern who is willing to learn, can take on bigger responsibilities progressively, take initiative, and be creative. The successful applicant must thrive in a fast-paced working environment and can deliver high-quality output under tight deadlines.

This internship is an exciting opportunity for college seniors, new graduates, or graduate students in the fields of communications, journalism, public relations, and other related fields who wish to work in an international development setting.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 

Administrative support to HOVERLA’s Communications Unit: 

  • Provide substantive administrative support to the communications team in developing and producing communications and outreach materials (reports, presentations, social media posts, videos, infographics, and other products). 
  • Assist in gathering materials and information for various communications materials, such as success stories, Facebook posts, written reports, presentations, video, and other communications products. 
  • Work with HOVERLA’s photography and video service providers to ensure images and videos capture the event in a creative and visually compelling way.
  • Assist in the management of HOVERLA’s knowledge bank (OneDrive/TAMIS knowledge repository/SharePoint). 
  • Catalogue HOVERLA photos; create and manage a photo and document filing protocol.
  • Coordinate with the technical teams to gather reports and information to ensure that deadlines are observed.
  • Provide other administrative support as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned by Strategic Communications Manager, Sr. Communications Specialists, COP or DCOP

Administrative Support to Outreach and Events:

  • Provide substantive administrative assistance in organizing, coordinating, and setting up HOVERLA events and press conferences, including preparing material specifications, conducting market surveys, and preparing procurement requests. 
  • Support the communications team in preparing all required communications products for events, ensuring they are appropriately branded and marked.
  • Prepare procurement requisitions for communications activities following DAI logistics, finance, and procurement processes.
  • Coordinate with external service providers (such as designers, photographers, and video crew) to ensure the prompt completion of deliverables.
  • Assist in coordinating with external contracted consultants and firms on event management (production of materials, branding, visibility, outreach). 
  • Support the communications team in organizing media coverage, including but not limited to inviting national and regional media entities, preparing media kits, and managing the media during the event.
  • Assist in preparing after-event publications and news materials, including press releases, Facebook posts, photo releases, and other formats as may be required.

Qualifications:

  • Senior college student, university students, new graduate, or graduate student in journalism, PR, languages, communications, or related fields; a master’s degree is an asset.
  • Solid writing and speaking skills in English and Ukrainian.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with MS Office programs; knowledge of graphic arts and/or desktop publishing software is a plus.
  • Social media savvy; experience in curating or maintaining Facebook pages, websites, and database portals; knowledge of other social media platforms.
  • Prior work experience, especially in media and communications, is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of the Ukrainian media landscape and familiarity with the workings of the government is a plus.
