About Us
The Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation is an international rights-based, survivor-centred organisation working to change the collective response to conflict-related sexual violence. Founded in 2015, based in The Hague, with offices in Central African Republic and Ukraine, the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation supports survivors’ demands for a world where sexual violence as a weapon of war is no longer tolerated, and bears consequences for individual perpetrators and states.
We work for a future where survivors receive the holistic care and compensation they need to rebuild their lives. We create opportunities for survivors to speak out and be heard, and where they can organise to create change, influence policies, and demand justice and accountability. We are working towards a future where sexual violence in conflict is no longer seen as inevitable but is recognised for what it is: a crime that should have consequences. We want the international community to draw a line against wartime sexual violence and to hold states and individuals accountable.
Inspired by the work of Dr Denis Mukwege and his team at Panzi Hospital in DRC, the Mukwege Foundation advocates for quality, holistic, survivor-centred, and trauma-informed care as a benchmark in the care for survivors of sexual violence in conflict-affected contexts.
Background
Since 2018, the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation has been engaged in Ukraine, working closely with partners and SEMA Ukraine, the Ukrainian Network of Women Affected by Violence.
In April 2022, under the invitation of Ukraine’s Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy, a joint scoping mission was conducted by the Global Survivors Fund (GSF) and the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation (MF) to assess how best the sister organisations could support Ukraine in strengthening a holistic approach to the prevention and response of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). In July 2022, a joint memorandum of understanding was signed among MF, GSF, the Ukraine Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy and the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, to support the implementation of a holistic response to conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine, including access to justice and reparations, inspired by the Panzi model of holistic care, developed by Dr. Mukwege and his team at Panzi Hospital and Foundation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This MoU has been extended until end of 2025.
MF’s country programme, led by a team based in Kyiv, aims to strengthen the delivery of and access to quality survivor-centred holistic care for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, support survivor engagement and advocacy and raise awareness about CRSV, state obligations and survivors’ individual and collective rights for holistic care including justice and reparations.
Job overview
Mukwege Foundation is looking for a highly motivated, compassionate, and dedicated individual to join its team in Kyiv, Ukraine, as a Learning Programme Coordinator.
MF strengthens access to holistic care through technical assistance, funding and support for referrals, capacity building, and in some settings the direct provision of care.
In MF’s capacity-building work around the world in contexts like Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Iraq and the African Great Lakes region, MF uses approaches like “Linking and Learning”, “Training of Trainers” and knowledge exchange between multi-sectoral service providers from different conflict-affected contexts, and the experts at Panzi Hospital and Foundation in DRC.
As part of its goal to strengthen the delivery of quality holistic care for survivors of conflict related sexual violence in Ukraine, Mukwege Foundation is committed to reinforcing the knowledge and capacities of all professionals and other actors who may be involved in caring work for survivors.
MF sees the learning component as crucial to its overall Ukraine programme. This is also in line with the initial request initiated by the Government Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy to the office of Dr. Mukwege, and continued insistence from actors on the national and regional levels in Ukraine, to ensure common and standardised knowledge across sectors and institutions, on survivor-centred holistic care and best practices for case-management. To respond to this need, in line with MF’s engagements with the State of Ukraine and its role within the Inter-Agency Working Group on Combating Sexual Violence Related to Russia’s Armed Aggression against Ukraine and Assistance to the Survivors (IAWG). MF has convened a Joint Technical Committee of Ukrainian and international experts to support a participatory development process of a comprehensive CRSV learning programme, which aims to provide practitioners and other stakeholders, across different sectors, with common knowledge on core themes related to ensuring survivor-centred holistic care, and particularly drawing from the knowledge and competencies within the JTC and based on the practice-based knowledge, the model and philosophy of care of Panzi, in the DRC.
The content of the comprehensive learning programme under development consists of 2 key components:
- 4 core modules designed as foundational learning for all professionals involved in CRSV response. These modules are digital, self-paced modules which cover the following topics:
- Defining and recognising CRSV
- Survivor-centred and holistic care in response to CRSV
- What is a Trauma-informed approach to care?
- Caring for care providers
- A manual and associated learning aids designed to be used by trainers as a basis for the development of in-person or hybrid training on more in-depth elements of care for CRSV survivors for the following groups of professionals:
- Medical
- Psychosocial
- Legal/law enforcement
- Social/socio-economic
Also forming part of this comprehensive learning programme, MF, together with partners such as ARQ International and Physicians for Human Rights, has developed and implemented and is developing specific stand-alone including a Training of Trainers programme on staff care, “Care for Carers”, and training for medical and law enforcement personnel on forensic documentation.
MF is finalising plans for the piloting of its digital modules and is exploring partnerships with different international platforms and national institutions.
The roll-out of this learning programme is a key means of implementing MF’s engagements with the State of Ukraine and furthermore its role in different coordination mechanisms related to CRSV response in this context.
In order to support the roll-out of this comprehensive learning programme, MF seeks to recruit a Learning programme Coordinator to join MF Ukraine country team. Learning programme Coordinator is expected to support the MF Ukraine Programme Manager in moving forward the learning programme and ensuring that the learning content developed by MF and partners, reaches planned target audiences.
