Background. The UNDP internship programme offers an outstanding graduate-level student or recent graduate the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP’s work in Ukraine with the objective of deepening his/her knowledge and understanding of UNDP’s goals, principles and activities. It is designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various professional aspects. Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP but are encouraged to secure funding for their internship from other sources.

Objective of the internship:

To provide students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds exposure to development issues and a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of UNDP and to contribute to UNDP’s overall programming objectives within their area of specialization.

Duties and Responsibilities. UNDP provides support to Ukraine under the umbrella of the United Nations Partnership Framework for the period 2018 – 2022. UNDP Ukraine is supporting the Government to find innovative solutions to its development and governance reform challenges based on the UNDAF Action Plan and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. In line with the national strategy and reform agenda, UNDP supports institutional and policy reforms that foster inclusive, gender-responsive and sustainable human development and address Ukrainian challenges in the areas of democratization, anti-corruption and transparency, human rights and access to justice, civil society development and civic participation, and strengthening government institutions, including the parliament and local government bodies.

Reporting structure and partners: Reports to Democratic Reform and Sustainable Development Advisor. Works in close collaboration with thematic direction team leads/project managers, Programme Analysts, M&E Associate, Business Development and Innovation Unit and Communications.  

Effective support to Programme activities with the focus on following:

  • Assist in conceptual design of new project proposals with research, concept development, and team reviews in line with UNDP and donor requirements;
  • Support the Senior Advisor and project teams in strengthening outcomes and coordinating collaborative initiatives across portfolios and projects to promote innovation and increase efficiency and reach of UNDP interventions, in line with UNDP’s role as a integrator agency;
  • Support the Senior Advisor and Programme teams in implementing a strategic vision in line with UNDP Strategic Plan, UNDP Country Programme Document, Agenda 2030 and national reform priorities;
  • Contribute to research in the area of democratic reform and sustainable development: undertake research and provide support to UNDP projects on applying innovative and cross-cutting solutions to accelerate the achievement of SDGs, in particular Goals 10, 11 and 16, with a specific focus on the ‘leave no one behind’-principle and an emphasis on youth, women and marginalized communities (e.g. Roma);
  • Contribute to knowledge management & capacity building of Programme staff: support knowledge sharing and capacity building activities on human-rights based approach, gender mainstreaming, data science, monitoring and evaluation, etc.
  • Support the Senior Advisor and Programme teams in other relevant tasks including direct support to programmatic activities in logistics and organizational issues.

Impact of Results:

Relevant support to programme activities is provided on time and with high quality.

  • Ability to handle a large volume of work under time constraints
  • Strong IT and communication skills
  • Consistently approaches work pro-actively with energy and a positive, a constructive attitude and a willingness to function in diverse, multi-cultural teams

Demonstrable experience applying innovative and creative solutions to address professional and contextual challenges

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

  • Enrolled student in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Economics, Statistics, Political Science, International Relations, Management, Sociology or any other field relevant to monitoring and evaluation; or
  • Enrolled student in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in Economics, Statistics, Political Science, International Relations, Management, Sociology or any field relevant to monitoring and evaluation; or
  • Graduate student within one year of graduation of any of other above. 

Experience:

  • Complete fluency in usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) is required;
  • Experience in handling of web-based management systems is an asset. 

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required. Ukrainian (or Russian) are an asset.
