Job title: Senior Environmental Compliance Manager
Location: this position is based in Kyiv and project sites in Ukraine.
Level of Effort: Full-time, long-term position.
The Senior Environmental Compliance Manager plays a critical role in supporting the Infrastructure Manager and project teams in ensuring environmental compliance within irrigation systems. Through his/her expertise in environmental management, he/she contributes to the development and implementation of effective mitigation measures to minimize environmental impacts and promote sustainable development.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement environmental compliance strategies and procedures in line with USAID requirements and local regulations.
- Conduct environmental assessments and impact analyses for irrigation projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
- Provide guidance and support to construction companies regarding environmental safeguard procedures throughout project implementation.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities, to ensure effective environmental management.
- Monitor and evaluate the environmental performance of construction activities, identifying and addressing any non-compliance issues.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on environmental compliance and project progress to donors and relevant authorities.
- Facilitate communication and coordination between project teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies to address environmental concerns and ensure timely project delivery.
- Stay updated on developments in environmental regulations and best practices, incorporating relevant changes into project activities as necessary
Supervision and Reporting
The Senior Environmental Compliance Manager reports to and is supervised directly by the Infrastructure Manager.
Qualifications
- Educational requirement of a Bachelor of Science degree (preferred), or certificate in environmental science at a university or community.
- Have 5 years of experience in environmental safeguard procedures for donor organizations such as USAID, the EU, the World Bank or other international agencies
- Provide course-based (and on the-job) training on USAID and Ukrainian environmental safeguards procedures to the construction companies who carry out the rehabilitation of irrigation works
- Experience in environmental safeguards procedures for irrigation projects a plus.
- Preference shall be given to individuals who have worked in or with the Ukrainian national or municipal government.
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills in English, Ukrainian language skills a plus.
