OVERVIEW OF INTERNSHIP PROJECT

A key component of Mercy Corps’ strategy in responding to the situation in Ukraine is to partner with local civil society organizations (CSOs) engaged in humanitarian and resilience-building activities in the Ukraine Response.  According to Mercy Corps’ partnership philosophy, CSOs are considered equal partners in program implementation, not contractors. Mercy Corps offers a whole range of support to local organizations to help them strive in what they do. This includes a number of capacity strengthening approaches.

The Partners Capacity Strengthening intern will have the opportunity to immerse in the internal work with partners, learn how CSOs operate and what challenges they face in their work, gain experience in using special tools to strengthen the capacity of CSOs, have the opportunity to join workshops and other capacity strengthening activities, and contribute to  organizing  a large Partnership event. The intern will also have the opportunity to gain experience in the international humanitarian and development sector and gain experience in the international humanitarian and development field.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Understand the Ukrainian and European socio-political space and its relationship to civil society development and humanitarian efforts, and be able to understand the range of stakeholders in this space.

  • Gain understanding and confidence in civil society development, institutional capacity strengthening, building quality communication with partners and other processes and methods of external engagement of INGOs.
  • Learn about the involvement of INGOs and Ukrainian CSOs in key relevant areas such as humanitarian aid, economic resilience, and support for agriculture.
  • Expose to the equitable partnership approach and localization concepts, learn how these principles are implemented in the Ukraine context and by various actors.
  • Gain experience in analyzing previous events and preparing reports and recommendations for further partnership development
  • Gain experience working in a multicultural work environment, coordinating and communicating with a team working in different time zones and geographical Develop planning and organizational skills.
  • Prepare for partner capacity strengthening activities, such as requests from partners for trainings, reports on activities, availability of supporting documents (photographs, developed documents, expert reports, etc.)
  • Work with the Capacity Development Coordinator to prepare training materials, sample documents, including analytical studies, presentations, etc. to support the preparation of trainings, seminars, workshops based on the curriculum
  • Communicating with partners to collect information and data on participation in trainings, seminars, workshops
  • Creating records and for future reports and analytical materials during capacity strengthening workshops, creating presentations for events
  • Contribute to the development of a learning document following the Partnership event
  • Collecting supporting documentation to confirm the activities planned by the partners in the capacity strengthening Plan (photos, reports, details of trainings, etc.)

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

We are looking for someone who is passionate about our vision and mission and welcomes the opportunity to help us increase our credibility, influence and impact through exciting and original initiatives. The ideal candidate:

  • Is a 4rd year student or above or a postgraduate student majoring in international relations, law, political science, sociology, public administration, or related fields. Or a maximum of two years after graduation.
  • Has a clear interest in international humanitarian assistance, civil society development, and the relationship between INGO, Ukrainian CSOs and the government.
  • Well-organized, proactive and communicative, strictly adheres to deadlines. Flexibility and resourcefulness are also valued.
  • Has good computer skills: experienced and confident user of Office 365, advanced user of Excel (able to work with graphs and process data), experience with design software such as Canva will be an advantage.
  • Experience in event coordination and organization is desirable.
  • English language skills (required) at Pre-intermediate level. Intermediate would be an advantage.
