Junior Energy Specialist (full-time, Kyiv)

The aim of the project “Support for Structural Change in Ukrainian Coal Regions” is to ensure that Ukraine carries out the structural change associated with the coal phase-out in a socially and economically compatible and ecologically sustainable manner.
In the upcoming decade, unprofitable state-owned coal mines will be seizing its operations. This poses major social and economic challenges for the coal regions. The structural change needed to overcome them, based on the concepts of Just Transition and Green Recovery, can provide new impetus for the development and growth in the affected regions, and beyond. Decarbonization of the economy also makes a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ability to raise its level of ambition in the context of global climate protection.
In light of the war in Ukraine, the project currently focuses on reconstruction and recovery efforts in the Ukrainian energy sector and supports Western coal regions in their efforts to host internally displaced persons.
The Junior Energy Specialist performs the following tasks:
- Supports the team in the implementation of all technical support activities in the field of structural change in coal regions/ just transition;
- Supports in running all technical activities smoothly and ensures adequate implementation of the project’s activities;
- Supports in compiling, verifying, collating of data and information related to projects’ operations, screens background information and coordinates inputs on projects’ operations, monitors changes in political and economic surrounding and draft briefings;
- Drafts Terms of References for organizational issues and supervises accurate implementation;
- Drafts Terms of References for consulting contracts on trainings, workshops and research;
- Supports with organization of operational planning and other coordination sessions of the team, prepares and moderates team meetings;
- Supports in organization, implementation, documentation, communication and follow-up of workshops, trainings, stakeholder consultations and other events (offline, online, hybrid), international exchange formats and visits of international delegations;
- Supports the project team in monitoring project activities, knowledge management and document management for DMS in line with GIZ’s filing rules, keeps track of forthcoming meetings and events and autonomously monitors and addresses open tasks and deadlines for these events;
- Provides cross-cutting support to the project team, procurement and finance officers in performing their tasks related to the project operations;
- Performs other duties and tasks at the request of management.
Required qualifications, experience and competences:
- BA in Business Administration, Management, Linguistics, Energy and other degree in an area that is related to the project objectives, with a focus on a relevant field;
- At least 2 years of experience, including through internships, in the sphere of sustainable development, energy and climate policy, event management or international cooperation;
- Experience or at least interest for the topics in the fields of energy transition, coal and extracting industries, coal regions in Ukraine and other European countries;
- Preferably experience with working in international organizations, primarily in the international development cooperation sector;
- Very good knowledge of English; Ukrainian native level required; knowledge of German is an asset;
- Excellent and proactive communicator with a service-oriented attitude;
- Excellent organization skills;
- Good working knowledge of MS Office package and digital conference tools;
- Curiosity and creativity in inventing new exchange formats;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in an international context;
- Ability to accomplish projects on own responsibility within a team.

Employment conditions
Full-time position with 40-hours working week. Place of assignment is Kyiv. The assignment starts as soon as possible. Contract duration – 1 year.
