Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Head of Programme and Operations, the Language Associate will provide quality translations and interpretations from English into Russian/Ukrainian languages, and vice versa, ensuring consistency of terminology and demonstrating highest standards of professional behavior, including dealing with confidential information. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of key functions:

  • Provide high-quality written translation from Russian/Ukrainian/English into English/Ukrainian/Russian of different documents, including media sources, letters, reports, legislative documents, etc.;
  • Ensure quality check of translations; ensuring that no errors are left in the final texts;
  • Update and maintain terminology database;
  • Coordinate work of external translation agencies, as required;
  • Provide high-quality substantive editing and proofreading of documents;
  • Provide interpretation services (consecutive) from English into Russian/Ukrainian languages, and vice versa during meetings, presentations and other events, as required;
  • Provide administrative support before, during and after meetings, including agendas, invitations and minutes;
  • Perform other duties, as requested by the supervisor.

Impact of Results

Key results have an impact on the efficiency of the OHCHR/HRMMU office. Accurate analysis and presentation of information strengthens the capacity of the OHCHR/HRMMU office and promotes the image of the UN as an effective contributor to the development of the country. Incumbent’s own initiative is decisive in results of work and timely finalization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Secondary Education. Undergraduate university degree in Philology, Linguistics, Translation, Interpretation or related field is desired but is not a requirement

Experience:

  • Minimum 6 years of working experience as a translator and/or interpreter in Ukrainian, Russian and English is required
  • Experience in written translation of specialized texts under tight deadlines is required
  • Working experience in international organizations, UN agencies and/or INGOs/NGOs will be a strong asset
  • Experience of work in the humanitarian field will be an asset
  • Experience in providing interpretation for national and international events is desired
  • Strong experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required
  • Experience of use of specialized translation software is desired

Languages Required:

  • Proficiency in English, Ukrainian and Russian
