General Position Summary

Working in the Finance Department under the direction of the Project Finance Officer and with close coordination with the program team, the Project Finance Assistant will assist in adhering to the compliance procedures for financial, procurement, accounting processes and ensure adequate internal control procedures are in place and in compliance with laws, regulations, donor requirements and Mercy Corps policies and procedures.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Support and/or prepare monthly project accounts for the grant
  • Support Project Manager in communicating any relevant financial matters to donors, including exchange rate variations where relevant
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports in accordance with donor requirements
  • Assist the Project Finance Officer in financial reviews of grant payment documentation
  • Assist the Project Finance Officer to enhance the efficiency of the existing control system and ensure any identified compliance gaps are corrected
  • Ensure electronic and hard copies of supporting documentation are complete and compliant with donor requirements
  • Give maximum support towards a successful closure of the month and year-end processes
  • Always imbibe the culture of audit readiness
  • Carry out other tasks relating to matters of finance as required by the Resilience Pilot Project
  • Any other tasks to be assigned by the supervisor.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Project Finance Officer

Works Directly With: FD, PFO, FM, SFOs, FOs, PMs, HR, Operations and other MC team members

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • A Degree in Accounting or a relevant Business field.
  • Two (2) or more years of accounting or bookkeeping experience, including experience with double-entry accounting
  • Lending experience in banks will be an advantage, credit checking/donor reporting.
  • Experience with a contemporary ERP (SAP/Oracle/Navigator/Sun Systems)
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office programs, particularly Excel
  • Familiarity with computerized, double-entry accounting software
  • Strong organizational skills as well as attention to detail.
  • Good oral and written English skills.

Success Factors

A clear understanding of finance, accounting, organizational skills as well as the willingness and ability to enforce compliance with Mercy Corps and donor policies and procedures is essential

The ability to interact effectively with international and national staff members is required

A demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately, meet deadlines and process information in support of changing program activities is necessary
