About our Organisation

The Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group (ACA) is a collaborative effort between the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom to coordinate and support justice and accountability efforts by Ukrainian authorities to ensure accountability for atrocity crimes committed in the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine. It is committed to demonstrating international support and solidarity during this crucial historical moment for Ukraine.

About the role

The Legal Adviser/National Lawyer will work closely with ACA/GU team in Ukraine to provide timely and quality advice and guidance to Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, in particular the Office of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise on Ukrainian criminal law and criminal procedure and advise on the structure and organization of OPG and ministries with investigative mandates,
  • Conduct legal and factual research related to the ongoing aggression by the Russian Federation and its impact on international humanitarian law and human rights law,
  • Compile and analyze information for investigative purposes to support the OPG,
  • Assist in the preparation of project deliverables to further the accountability process,
  • Facilitate meetings and interactions with relevant stakeholders,
  • Support senior lawyers and investigators in their work.
  • Other tasks as required.

Candidate requirements

Mandatory:

  • Minimum of (2) years of relevant legal experience,
  • Expertise in domestic Ukrainian criminal law and procedure.,
  • Practical experience working with Ukrainian justice actors,
  • Experience in International Criminal Law (ICL) or International Humanitarian Law (IHL) with a practical application,  
  • Flexibility and creativity, ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment,
  • Self-starting ability, capable of working towards a desired outcome with minimal guidance.
  • A practical thinker with the capability to break down and implement strategies effectively.
  • Strong administrative skills to manage competing and urgent demands.
  • Fluency in English, Ukrainian, and Russian.
  • Proven experience in handling sensitive materials and demonstrating the necessary skills in storing, sharing, and working with such materials.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a post-Soviet country/system.
  • Experience in investigations or prosecutions, including supervision of investigations.
  • familiarity or past experience working with OPG
